Us Miserly Canucks
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 01:37PM This week the Fraser Institute released a study on charitable giving. Manitoba was Canada’s most generous province with 28% of them donating anything to charities; Ontario was second; Newfoundland was last.
Did I read that right? Only 28% of people in Canada’s most generous province even donate a dollar to charity? Does that seem sad to anyone else?
The study also compared Canadians to Americans. Though, in my experience, Canadians love to think ourselves morally superior in all ways to Americans, they blow us away in bigheartedness. Of all 64 North American jurisdictions they measured, Canadian provinces and territories held 12 of the bottom 20 spots. Utah, the US's most generous generous state gives 3 TIMES more than Manitoba does. And the average American donation of $4,388 almost quadruples the average Canadian one.
Why?
Read the study here.
